The Southend YMCA Community School is governed by a Board of committed Governors who possess wide ranging skills and expertise relevant to the school's needs, including charity and company management, education, children's services development, project management and law. The Board meet every half-term to ensure that the overall direction of the school is in line with its 'vision and resources'. Good governance ensures that Southend YMCA Community School performs tasks in a timely, inclusive, open, honest and accountable manner using effective internal controls and review processes ensuring scrutiny and challenge.

Ron Wright – Chair of Governors

Ron is a business man. He worked in international logistics before taking early retirement to run his own social housing project for excluded adults. Ron was an international negotiator and latterly responsible for the corporate training and the graduate development programme for P&O. He is Chair of SYMCA and a Chair of Governors of a local junior school. Ron combines business acumen with social responsibility.

Gillian Whiteley

Gill is a qualified Head Teacher. Prior to retirement she fulfilled the post of Deputy Head Teacher of a large junior school situated in an area of high deprivation and social need. Her commitment to an early intervention approach ensured that many children at elevated risk made good progress and overcame barriers to learning. Gill was a staff Governor and is Trustee of Southend YMCA etc. Although retired Gill worked as a consultant on the Local graduate teacher programme involving the training, support and assessment of trainees. Gill has proven educational acumen and is the designated Governor for pupils with special educational needs.

Simon Ling Locke

Simon is a Finance Lecturer at the European School of Economics, the ifs School of Finance and an Associate Lecturer with the OU. Simon has held the following city posts: Director at Loan Market Association (LMA), Assistant General Manager at UFJ Bank, and Head of Business Development at Tokai Bank. Additionally, Simon provides credit risk consultancy and training services for banks and financial institutions on a worldwide basis and as such is able to articulate and manage all the organisational risks.

Qualifications - Simon holds a Masters of Business Administration and is a Fellow of the Chartered Institute of Bankers.

Simon has proven financial acumen, and will undertake a treasurers role and Chair the Finance Committee His role will include oversight of the budget and preparation of a risk register. Tasks which will be undertaken on a voluntary basis.

Syrie Cox

Syrie is the CEO of Southend YMCA and is the charities corporate governor. She has 13 years' experience in Executive roles developing and delivering services including: education and training, housing, positive activities, through to award winning provision from clinical services for young people with emerging mental health problems through to the SOS Bus which has recently won the Queens award for Volunteering . Syrie is a regular key note speaker at national, regional and local conferences - she is an established and highly respected CEO with a proven track record in strategic planning, leadership, change management through to quality improvement.
